The 1 oz American Gold Buffalo is minted from 24-karat or 99.99% pure gold, while the 1 oz American Gold Eagle is made from 22-karat or 91.67% pure gold.

There is an effigy of a Native American chief on the coin’s obverse side and an American buffalo on the reverse side. The coin’s design pays tribute to James Earle Fraser's Indian Head nickel (1913 to 1938) design.

American Gold Buffalos are legal tender in the United States and have a US$50 face value.

According to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the American Gold Buffalo is eligible for holding in U.S. IRA retirement accounts.
